One of the first things people ask me when they're considering a move to Northern California is: what's the weather actually like? And the honest answer is, it's one of the best parts about living here. The Sacramento Valley enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers, mild winters, and four distinct seasons that each bring something to enjoy. Whether you're an avid gardener, a weekend hiker, or someone who simply loves sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee, the lifestyle here revolves around being outside.

What the Climate Looks Like Throughout the Year

Northern California's inland communities, Sacramento, Lincoln, Yuba City, Plumas Lake, and Wheatland, share a similar climate pattern. Summers are hot and dry, with average highs in the mid-90s from June through August. The humidity stays low, which makes the heat much more comfortable than you might expect. Winters are mild, with average highs in the 50s and 60s and most of the rain falling between November and March. Snow is extremely rare in the valley, though you can drive up to the Sierra Nevada and enjoy it within a couple of hours.

Spring and fall are the real gems. Temperatures settle into the 70s and 80s, the landscapes are lush and green, and these are the seasons when you'll find the entire region outdoors, walking trails, farmers markets, community events, and weekend adventures. Sacramento receives about 18 inches of rainfall annually, and communities like Yuba City and Lincoln see similar totals, keeping the landscape green through the wet months without the flooding or extreme weather that other parts of the country deal with.

If you live in Sacramento, the American River Parkway offers over 30 miles of biking and walking trails, and Lake Natoma provides scenic loops perfect for a morning hike or a paddle on the water.

Move a little farther north and the options only expand. Yuba City sits near the Yuba River, where you can swim, hike, gold pan, and explore along some of the most beautiful stretches of river in Northern California. Collins Lake and Scotts Flat Lake are popular for camping, fishing, and boating. For those living in or near Plumas Lake, the Lakes Basin Recreation Area in Plumas National Forest offers over 20 alpine lakes, 30-plus miles of trails, and access to the Pacific Crest Trail, all within reach for a day trip or weekend getaway.

Lincoln and Wheatland residents enjoy the same access to foothill and valley recreation. River Oaks Golf Club near Nicolaus is a favorite for golfers, and the Plumas-Eureka State Park, just an hour or so from the valley floor, features waterfalls, mountain lakes, and trails ranging from easy woodland strolls to more challenging mountain hikes.
